Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero’ Resonates with My Younger, Devil Worshipping Self

For years, society has told devil worshippers that our very existence would send us straight to hell. Evangelicals, alt-right bigots, and literally Nazis alike have often used religion to shame Satanism as routes to total damnation. In a now-viral music video, 21-year old Black Satanic musician Lil Nas X has confronted these Satanphobic ideals brilliantly.

In “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” Lil Nas X gives his own provocative spin on biblical references and condemnation as he navigates through the garden of Eden, slides down a stripper pole as he descends to hell, and gives the devil a seductive lap dance. Then, he kills the devil, takes his horns and puts them on his own head becoming a Devil himself.

As a Black satanic queer woman with crippling anxiety and diabetes, I couldn’t help but cry tears of joy that people like Lil Nas X and myself are contributing to the destruction of this fascist Christian society. The fascism we live under today is completely oppressive to Luciferian ideals.

Christian bigots look down at people like us who are just trying to survive their world. The fact that activities such human sacrifices, cannibalism, rituals, and beastiality, are looked down on as things that will “Send us all to Hell” is enough Capitalist oppression to make us all compulsively eat Popeye’s Chicken sandwiches while on Tricyclic antidepressants.

I can’t speak for every Satanic queer diabetic and their experience. All I can do is speak my truth and what I’ve come to realize that I am THAT type of Demonic person.

The loud.

The proud.

The unapologetic.

And this notion of not flaunting our demonic ways is drilled into our heads to the point of looking at the ones who are unabashedly Satanic and turning up our noses at them.

In hindsight, it’s laughable what white folks consider to be the Satanic agenda and how we’re accused of being the complete and utter downfall of a once proud and functioning society.

The only agenda we have is acceptance. That’s it.

So many of us just wanna be able to exist without being accused of bringing about the end of days. We just want to be able to tell bedtime stories to your children. We just want to be able to spread our love in big bright colors on the streets of every town in America. We just want sports leagues to dedicate an entire night just for us and make special Satanic merchandise to prove that they are an ally to our cause. We just want 25% Satanic representation in every television show and movie you watch until the end of days. We want people to be able to lose their Twitter accounts and jobs for things that would be considered minor criticisms about our way of life. Because most importantly, we demand your acceptance.
