Robert & Ingrid at the Movies: Gamera vs Gyaos (1967)

Ingrid and I are back again with more installments of our Gamera Movie Marathon. As we rewind now to the original 8 movies of what is known as the ‘Showa Era‘, you may want to check out the first two here and here. We’ll be going over its highs – and its incredibly painful lows. Now for the record, we will be going with the AiP (American International Productions Television) dubs/re-edits of the movies when applicable. The Sandy Frank dubs were just too corny (but we know at least one movie we’ll have no choice but to use that one).

Now tonight’s film has clearly become our favorite of the Showa Era (surpassing vs Barugon ever so slightly) as we’re introduced to the creature that would become Gamera’s reoccurring rival… Gyaos!

This is also the first movie where we REALLY get more of a leaning towards kids as the main plot of the story. However until those kids that’ll be coming in the future, Eiichi (the kid in this film) avoids so many of the pitfalls. He’s not a know it all, he’s not the main focus of the movie, and when he contributes it’s in a way that makes sense.

This quickly became mine and Ingrid’s most favorite of the Showa because it had a lot of action, the characters all made sense, the plotting/pacing was tight. It was just a perfect balance of everything we want from a Kaiju movie!
