Yes, I admit it! I’m an unashamed Steven Universe fan and I have been for a long time. I’ve enjoyed the shows, while acknowledging its flaws, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it’s nowhere near deserving of the amount of flack it gets. Arguably it does have some toxic fan elements in its base to be sure, but the show itself? Not at all.
There’s no further proof than the full length movie that was released this past Labor Day and I loved it! It was released on September 2, 2019 on Cartoon Network after the Every Steven Ever marathon they played leading up to the movie. A digital release came out on September 3 in case you want to own if for yourself.
As a long time fan, I found it to be a great next chapter in Steven’s life, skipping two years from the events of the season 5 finale, and it hit the ground running! A new threat has arrived and I have to admit that it’s not entirely what people expected from the trailers! Steven has to save his friends, try to redeem the villain (as he always tries to do), all the while singing his tunes because it’s also a musical too!
I found the humor to be clever, the action was great, and I thought both the music and animation work were incredible! If you’re a fan of the series, you HAVE to see it! And the truth is that if you’re not a fan or you are a lapsed fan who fell way behind, then yeah, you’ll be lost seeing this, unfortunately. This movie gets high recommendation from me. Allow me to spoil it for you in the video below.
