Comics Review | Red Sonja: The Superpowers #1

Red Sonja The Superpowers

Overview

In this adventure, the She Devil with a Sword – Red Sonja has witch-marked and taken on the killing a sorcerer Skarab Nor. Meanwhile, The Project has sent a team of heroes to Sonja’s plural world of 2709. Meta-human activity has been detected and they are on a mission to find out who or what it is. What happens when a Hyrkanian warrior on the hunt for a sorcerer encounters a group of superheroes?

Well, it’s not for tea, that’s for sure.

Impression

As with Vampirella Darkpowers, Dan Abnett is writing this and he is accompanied by Red Sonja veteran artist Johnathan Lau. And I must say that Johnathan’s interpretation of the Hyborian age is strong. It’s rough edged, and with colorist Andrew Dalhouse you get a real feel for the gruff and grit of this world. The action is great and the reader gets a real sense of the impact of hits when the fists fly and swords clash.

Red Sonja combat

Dan essentially splits the issue into two sides. We see things from Sonja’s perspective and her understanding of the situation, but we’re also given the same act from the perspective of the heroes sent from The Project. There isn’t any confusion about why things play out the way they do when the eventual meeting occurs because you know the motivating factors from both sides. The most interesting parts about the meeting is the clash of cultures and worlds of golden age heroes encountering a barbarian. The clothing, the way they talk, and so on. Speaking of which, Abnett gives detailed attention to how the characters speak. Sonja is underdeveloped compared to them, so verbal interactions demonstrate this and also melds the two sides of this coin together. In fact, even the approach to the situation by both sides is informed by the protagonists’ different eras.

Final Verdict

This has action, a slash of genres, and without a doubt a final page that personally made me say  ‘Damn, Sonja’. If you like to see genres clash together then I say give this a read. I’d also recommend this as it’s been hinted that this ties into the Vampirella Darkpowers issue, which means readers get a chance to read the very beginning of what could be an epic crossover being put together by Dynamite and Dan Abnett.
