There’ve been rumors for a while now that Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were likely to be delayed. Now the rumors have proven true with much more detail.
The sequel to Shazam! has been moved off of it’s December date, which would’ve had it opening opposite of Avatar 2 and having to fight for IMAX theaters, and is now scheduled on a more comfortable March 17th, 2023, weekend. This was where the Aquaman sequel had last been scheduled, but that sequel has now been bumped all the way to December 25th, 2023. This is the season when the first Aquaman opened around Christmas, so this isn’t going to surprise anyone, but the unexpected delay is being attributed to the film needing more time for post-production. Many are speculating that they are removing Amber Heard from the movie, who played Aquaman’s love interest Mera.
Warner Bros Discovery moved a few other films around and set an untitled event film for release on February 10th, 2023. There was no mention of Ezra Miller’s The Flash, which still appears to be scheduled for June 23rd, 2023. However, there are several theories on why Miller’s crime spree has not gotten the movie cancelled yet. What makes all this even more interesting is the word we got that reshoots were taking place on Aquaman to replace Michael Keaton’s Batman with Ben Affleck’s because it didn’t make sense to the audience without having seen The Flash why Keaton was back. However, if The Flash still comes out in June, they could go back to Keaton if that is still the studios plan.
Once again the studio isn’t saying anything and the fan base is dividing over what the delay means.
