Mark Hamill really loved playing Luke Skywalker one more time in the season finale. Some fans assumed that was the case given his displeasure over how the character was handled in the final chapters of the “Skywalker Saga,” but the iconic actor has confirmed his feelings.
“Sometimes the greatest gifts are the most unexpected and something you never realized you wanted until it was given,” Hamill said on Twitter, also thanking series creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni.
A de-aged Hamill once again played Skywalker, who saved the day like never quite seen before by the character in live-action. The day the episode aired on Disney+, Hamill tweeted, “Seen anything good on TV lately?” The following day he added, “The fact that we were able to keep my involvement a secret for over a year with no leaks is nothing less than a miracle. A real triumph for spoiler-haters everywhere! #LooseLipsSinkStarships #STFU.”
For a portion of fans, seeing Hamill play Luke one more time in such fashion as they were hoping for (and expecting) in the concluding three films of the “Skywalker Saga” was thrilling.
How the character was handled, especially by writer-director Rian Johnson in The Last Jedi, polarized the fan base to a degree not seen since Jar Jar Binks in 1999’s The Phantom Menace. Hamill was among those who expressed his displeasure over the return of Luke in Last Jedi.
“I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character,” Hamill told Johnson during the production of Last Jedi, the actor previously recounted.
Now it seems that Hamill feels that old familiar love for the character again. Kudos to Favreau and Filoni for making it possible.
