Flash Gordon Remake Now Live-Action; Taika Waititi Writing Script

While we originally reported in 2018 that Julius Avery had been hired by Fox to write and direct a Flash Gordon movie, it was later reported that Seth MacFarlane, with his love of all things 80s and his use of the property in Ted, would be responsible for bringing Flash Gordon back to the big screen. Now appears that Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi will be dipping his hand into another comic book franchise.

Waititi is currently working on a live-action film instead of an animated Flash Gordon film, according to Jungle Cruise producer John Davis, who stated in an interview two years ago. Davis told Collider in an interview that coincided with this past weekend’s premiere of Jungle Cruise, “Taika is writing it. It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up. It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, ‘Let’s do it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live-action.’ I said, ‘Even better.'”

Attempts to bring Gordon back to life have been ongoing since the character was mentioned in Ted in 2012, and despite Waititi having a number of upcoming projects lined up, including a turn directing a new Star Wars film, Davis is adamant that the Flash Gordon project is something the director is very passionate about.

“He has the most fantastically interesting vision for this movie. And you can only know it is Taika. It is what he does. It is the way he looks at the world. He is the greatest guy in the world. He is the funniest guy in the world. And he thinks on a different plane. And this movie embraces everything that’s special about Taika, and his vision. It harkens in a very interesting way to the original conception from the comics.”

Davis stated that he is content to wait for Waititi to find a time in his schedule to direct the film, and that he is convinced that it will happen at some point. One thing is certain: there are just as many people out there who are as eager as Davis that Taika Waititi’s rendition of Flash Gordon will be released sometime in the future. Although there may be some who are less than thrilled that it will likely be another comical take on the classic character.
