Benedict Cumberbatch Apparently Has No Interest in Star Wars

Benedict Cumberbatch won’t play any blue characters for Star Wars. The Sherlock and Doctor Strange star was asked recently in a Collider interview about fans casting him as Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka Tano. The series, a spinoff of The Mandalorian and staring the popular former Jedi character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels animated series was brought to life in the second season of the very popular series by Rosario Dawson, who has also been fan cast as the character before being chosen by producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.

Thrawn is one of the most popular villains in the franchise, though he’s been relegated to novels and animated series until now, but he was name dropped by Dawson in her appearance on The Mandalorian and is expected to be the big bad for couple series.

For his part, Cumberbatch was not familiar with the character, asking if he turns into “Peter Cushing or something?” A reference to Cushing’s role as Grand Moff Tarkin in the original Star Wars film. When the interview described the Chiss as being blue, the actor took a hard pass on the concept right then and there. “No no, seriously. I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a makeup chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that.”

With that, fans can put their efforts behind some of the other popular candidates such as Mads Mikkelsen who has already appeared in the Star Wars universe in Rogue One and his brother Lars Mikkelsen who voiced Thrawn in the animated series.
