Why is Warner Bros. Quietly Dumping Shazam 2 at Box Office?

Warner Bros.’ Shazam! Fury of the Gods is due out in less than two weeks, but the studio doesn’t appear to want to promote the film at all. We’ve been told that the first critics screenings will be taking place on March 7th, ten days before the film’s premiere, but so far the box office tracking on the film is terrible, and the movie may be too.

While the screenings for critics are on the 7th, there’s no indication as to when the studio’s review embargo will be lifted. Could be the next day, which could mean one of two things; either WBD is experimenting with a new marketing technique in which, rather than spending a lot of money over time, they will blitz market for it a week or two before the picture… Or, they may have concluded that this film is barely worth paying for and will put it out there hoping that character’s familiarity and word-of-mouth would suffice.

When the company was purchased by Discovery, CEO David Zaslav has tried to slash costs wherever possible, even canceling films such as the already completed Batgirl. There’s no telling why they don’t seem to be actively promoting the movie.

Shazam! 2 is also the first of four DC films due out this year that were made before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as heads of DC Studios in November and began reshaping the upcoming slate. Safran is a producer on Shazam! The sequel is the first DC pic to hit theaters since Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav installed Gunn and Safran.

Do you have any interest in seeing this in theaters?
