The Batman franchise is unique in that interest in the main character is often superseded by an interest in who will play the villain. The hero character is not particularly exciting; a dour and troubled rich boy moved to fight crime on the streets of Gotham. Christian Bale did a decent job of taking the character on, but he was overshadowed by Heath Ledger’s Joker.
The Joker is one of the most iconic ‘bad guys’ of all time, from the smiling tomfoolery of Cesar Romero through to the tortured maniac portrayed by Ledger. The spin-off film ‘Joker’ showed a more real backstory, with Joaquin Phoenix bringing a fresh and relatable new angle to the multidimensional character.
There is a new Batman film resumes production, with Robert Pattinson set to play the Caped Crusader. He believes he can make the tired role fresh and new, but all eyes would be on his opposite number, the Joker. There will be no tie-in with Phoenix’s Joker though, that franchise could see a second film, but not linked to Pattinson’s Batman.
Which actors do we think could play the fabled villain? These four could certainly do a job, given the chance.
Gosling seems to be destined to feature in a Batman movie at some point, but will it be as Joker, or as the hero, Batman? The split in the franchise means there is scope for another Caped Crusader, opposite Joaquin Phoenix, and We Got This Covered believes Gosling is in the frame.
He originally passed on playing Joker in Suicide Squad after failing to agree on a multi-movie deal, which paved the way for Jared Leto to step in. Instead of stepping into the shoes of Bruce Wayne, could he surprise everyone by finally taking up the role of Gotham’s favorite villain?
Leonardo Di Caprio
Di Caprio is as versatile as they come with a string of Hollywood movies behind him from many different genres. From Titanic to Inception, he has become a darling of the silver screen, finally getting recognition for his work four years ago. Gala Bingo documents how DiCaprio finally won an Oscar and it was one of the top moments in 2016 as his labored and intense interpretation of Hugh Glass finally bagged him the award he had craved all his career. As yet he has not strayed into superhero movies, but he would make an interesting Joker.
It was rumoured the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor was considered for the role of Arthur Fleck, played by Phoenix in Joker. That rumor was put to bed by director Todd Phillips, but it may have set the seed for the Pattinson reboot.
Brody has expressed interest in playing the role on two occasions. He was considered for the role in The Dark Knight, as well as in Justice League which ultimately didn’t feature a Joker. Brody, who has a menacing grin which he recently put to good use in British series Peaky Blinders, is still interested in playing a villainous role.
“To me, the villains are way fun!” said the New York native. “But (studios) don’t offer me those roles. If there is an opportunity to do something like that and play a comic book hero or villain, that’s not something I’m fundamentally opposed to.”
Bettany is another actor whose range of characters makes him perfect for a role as the Joker. After watching his portrayal of The Unabomber in Manhunter, as well as his devilish Silas in The Da Vinci Code, it would convince anyone he has the range for the Joker.
He’s also got plenty of experience in superhero movies as J.A.R.V.I.S. in the Marvel franchise and Pajiba believed he would have been a far better choice for Joker than Heath Ledger before Ledger obviously made it his own.
