Trailer Watch: Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator II’ Goes Full Gangsta

There it was. Yesterday saw the release of the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s unnecessary sequel Gladiator II, starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington. Paramount dropped the trailer Tuesday, and in a bizarre choice, scored it with a rap battle duet by Kanye West and Jay Z.

Gladiator II | Official Trailer (2024 Movie) - Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington

Accompanying captions on socials read: “From director Ridley Scott, watch the new Official Trailer for #GladiatorII starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger – Only in theatres November 22.” Written by David Scarpa from a story he created with Peter Craig, the Gladiator sequel is set years after the original film and has Mescal taking over the role of Lucius that Spencer Treat Clark portrayed in the 2000 movie.

Lucius is the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Commodus, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film. The plot is said to follow Lucius, who resides peacefully with his family in Numidia. But General Marcus Acacius’ (Pascal) invasion of the city forces Lucius into slavery. Inspired by Russel Crowe’s Maximus, Lucius decides to become a gladiator and challenge the rule of Emperors Caracalla (Hechinger) and Geta (Quinn).

No explanation was provided as to why Denzel Washington was using a New York accent in ancient Rome, or why they used a Jay Z / Kanye rap in the trailer… perhaps to pad Hollywood’s mandated DEI quota? I’ve come to the conclusion that when it comes to a Ridley Scott movie, you can flip a coin. I have very low expectations for this movie.
