The Buffyverse Returns With Audible’s ‘Slayers: A Buffyverse Story’

According to a press release from Audible, many of the original characters from the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer are set to return in Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

Reuniting for the 20th anniversary, the program will bring back James Marsters (Spike), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), Anthony Head (Rupert Giles), Juliet Landau (Drusilla), Emma Caulfield Ford (Anya Jenkins), Amber Benson (Tara Maclay), James Charles Leary (Clement), and Danny Strong (Jonathan Levinson).

The series picks up 10 years after the series finale – thankfully, skipping over the comics. Audible describes the plot as:

“The upcoming scripted audio original picks up 10 years after the events of the final episode of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ Since then, Spike (James Marsters) has gone deep undercover in Los Angeles, convincing the forces of darkness that he’s back to his evil ways. When his cover is compromised by sixteen-year-old Indira Nunnally (Laya DeLeon Hayes), Spike finds himself on baby-slayer-sitting duty once more.”

“While he attempts to track down a watcher for his eager new protégé, their paths collide with the veteran Slayer of a parallel reality where Buffy Summers never existed…a reality where Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) is the one-and-only Slayer. She needs Spike’s help with a classic big bad terrorizing her world…his old flame, Drusilla (Juliet Landau).”

It would be worth listening to Slayers: A Buffyverse Story just because of the return of the enigmatic and deadly Drusilla, who was one of my favorite characters.  Always loved the creepy way she moved and spoke, which really stood out among the large cast. Juliet Landau really captured the scene whenever Drusilla entered the room, so it was clever making her the ‘big bad’.

Notably, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is written and directed by Amber Benson and others, and not Joss Whedon. It will be interesting to see how the series fairs without his creative touch, but it makes sense why the cast chose to move on without him.

Male Feminist Joss Whedon is not a nice guy.

Fingers crossed that Slayers: A Buffyverse Story stays far away from the comics series that followed after the end of the television show, where lazy writers thought the only interesting vampire comic story was turning everyone LGBT and became a slog to read.

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is set to premiere on Audible 12 October 2023.
