Along with Henry VIII and Queen Victoria, Elizabeth I appears to be a monarch always on the shortlist for a TV or film project.
The new angle is her youth, but this has in fact been covered before, although Elizabeth’s mid to later years are the most popular as subject-matter, due to events such as Mary Queen of Scots imprisonment/execution, The Spanish Armada and Essex’s Rebellion.
A young perspective is guaranteed as the lead writer is wunderkind Anya Reiss (28) who had her first play Spur of the Moment at London’s Royal Court when she was just 17.
On he distaff side, she did write 27 episodes of the gormless BBC1 soap opera EastEnders.
Here’s just a smattering of Liz I in Film and TV since 2000:
FILM
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
Anonymous (2011)
Bill (2015)
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
TV
Henry VIII (2003)
The Other Boleyn Girl (2003)
Gunpowder, Treason (2004)
The Virgin Queen (2005)
Elizabeth (2005)
Reign (2013-17)
Dr Who (various episodes and actresses, 2009-13)
Upstart Crow (2017)
Plus numerous drama-docs…Lily Cole (Channel 5 in the UK) etc. So will Starz go for the soapy Reign-style angle? are they going back to the doublet and hose well one too many times after The White Queen, Spanish Princess and The White Princess?
