Ruby Rose, star of ‘Orange is the New Black’ was unveiled as CW’s new superhero earlier this week, and will make her first appearance as the character, a lesbian also known as Kate Kane, during The CW network’s annual DC ‘Arrowverse’ crossover TV event in December, before fronting her own standalone series. Since the modern incarnation of the character is an out lesbian, Rose, who also identifies as lesbian, would play the first openly gay superhero to headline an entire TV show.
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
Rose was emotional as she shared the news of her casting on Instagram on Wednesday. Later, she went on The Tonight Show and got a little tearful talking about what the new role means to her in terms of LGBTQ representation.
However, the news has also drawn a wave of backlash—and now the intense criticism seems to have driven Rose off of Twitter. Ruby Rose has deleted her Twitter account after receiving a barrage of criticism for being cast as superhero Batwoman. Since the announcement, Rose has faced criticism on social media, with some comic book fans slamming the actress for not being Jewish — as the character, Kate Kane is of that religion — and some even claimed the actress wasn’t gay enough to play a lesbian superhero.
Not only does ruby rose not identify as a lesbian but she’s not Jewish either. So…they basically lied about it wanting an actor that represented the diversity to stay true to who batwoman is and instead just picked a “hot” white person that isn’t too gay to offend the straights

Some of yall are acting like if the lesbian they cast was a better actress or whatever it would’ve been fine. But it needed to be a jewish lesbian from the get go. The biggest problem with ruby rose’s casting is that she is not jewish.

Ruby Rose being cast as Batwoman feels like The CW didn’t even try to look for actual talent.
They grabbed the ONLY lesbian Hollywood knows of and called it a day like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/4Rqz8q9JKa

Im just sad that when it comes down to lesbian representation, the same names always come up. As if ruby is the only gay actress you could have picked. It would be nice for us to be introduced to a new, less known actress who couldve taken this as an opportunitie.

I’m not excited about the casting but please #KeepKateJewish when writing her. Her Jewishness is so important to so many queer Jews such as myself, and that needs to be respected on screen. Jewish representation matters

Ruby rose is not the only lesbian actress in Hollywood🗣give to lesbian actresses the chance to get a job and to diversify the images and the voices of the lgbtq community being not represented by the same person every damn time. Representation AND DIVERSITY MATTER🗣📢

Cw: batwoman tv show
Cw: and the actress is gonna be a lesbian
Cw: but Ruby Rose is gonna play her

Thankfully, many people were supportive.
Scarlett Johansson cast in transgender role: Everyone on the internet loses their shit cause she’s not transgender.
Ruby Rose cast in Batwoman role: Everyone on the internet loses their shit cause she’s a lesbian playing a lesbian.
You idiots look for anything to bitch about.

But even some who were supportive didn’t exactly have the correct information and in their rush to push a narrative got so much of it entirely wrong.
Whether you like Ruby Rose’s acting or not, we can all agree that it’s fun to watch pathetic men’s rights fanboys get so triggered over an out lesbian Batwoman.

Um. What? Sorry fella, but we didn’t see any of those kinds of tweets, but you keep pushing that agenda, k?
The 32-year-old actress tried to defend herself against the hate but seemingly decided enough was enough and deleted her Twitter account on Saturday. Before pulling the plug, she wrote: “Where on earth did “Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman” come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with “she’s too gay” how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.”
Eventually, the actress deleted her Twitter.
She has also disabled comments on her Instagram posts in an effort to reduce the online backlash. Rose’s casting as Batwoman is set to make her the first openly gay lead in a live-action superhero series, and before she faced harsh criticism from fans, the star raved about the project on social media.
At least she did fandom a favor and explained her departure instead of the situation that happened with Star Wars The Last Jedi actress, Kelly Marie Tran. Like one of the tweets above, many have blamed that social media shutdown on mad fan boys, but it’s never been made clear by Disney or the actress.
As for Ruby Rose not being Jewish, I believe that to be a silly argument. People don’t have to be the same nationality or race to play a role. Charlie Chaplin, Sir Ben Kingsley, Charleton Heston, Tom Cruise, Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, and many other actors who are not Jewish have portrayed Jews in film and television. And strictly speaking about superheroes, Jewish actress Gal Gadot isn’t Amazonian, yet she played Wonder Woman. And the character of Clark Kent was a Kryptonian who grew up in Kansas. Did that mean the actor had to be from Kansas? Henry Cavill, the Man of Steel actor, is in fact British, so he was neither.
As for the actress “being gay enough,” what does that even mean?
Now the acting chops argument is kind of valid, but really weak. Ruby Rose’s acting in John Wick 2 was mediocre at best, but have any of these harsh critics actually watched any of the Arrowverse shows and graded the acting on those series? No true CW superhero fan is complaining about the acting ability.
No. The story here is that this actress was run off social media by the outrage culture that’s been cultivated by SJWs that can’t help but play identity politics. I’m beginning to believe that SJWs are unable to restrain their pettier, immediate emotional outbursts. They’re like 10 year olds with developmental disorders, and that what everyone must do to be #Woke is not merely permit oneself to descend into hysterics but to actively seek out reasons to descend into hysterics as frequently and as derangedly as possible.
Way to go, a-holes. This is why you can’t have nice things.
