‘Portlandia’ Creator Jonathan Krisel Directing Pokemon Detective Pikachu Sequel

Legendary Entertainment is in talks with Portlandia creator Jonathan Krisel to direct a sequel to the live action Pokemon Detective Pikachu film from 2019. Chris Galletta is onboard to writer the script. The initial film starred Ryan ReynoldsKen WatanabeJustice Smith and Kathryn Newton and grossed more than $430 million worldwide.

If you’ve seen the movie, it may not seem like an obvious choice to make a sequel out of as the draw for the film to non-Pokemon fans was the voice work of Reynolds which the ending of the first film would make it difficult for him to repeat, though it’s expected that Reynolds will have something to do with the project.

Krisel co-created, wrote and executive produced IFC’s sketch comedy show ‘Portlandia’, which starred fellow co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein in a multitude of oddball situations around Portland, Oregon. He also co-created, wrote and directed FX’s ‘Baskets’, starring Zach Galifianakis as a rodeo clown. Previously, Galletta wrote the 2013 coming-of-age comedy ‘The Kings of Summer’.
