In a post yesterday, Shannon Melero of feminist website Jezebel caused a stir when she stupidly asked “Who forgot to invite Chun-Li?” to the release of the Mortal Kombat trailer. Chun-Li is part of the Street Fighter series of games, not affiliated with Mortal Kombat – which fans were quick to point out.
The trailer for Mortal Kombat was released on February 18, for the upcoming film due to air on HBO Max on April 16. The trailer gained some traction for a notable absence of Johnny Cage, but it was the insipid ignorance of the Jezebel article that went viral on Twitter.
This is the first-ever Mortal Kombat red-band trailer by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, and it does features characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena, and Raiden, plus a ton of over-the-top violence and even more blood. The trailer isn’t technically our first look at the R-rated movie, but it is our first proper and extended look. Before this, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures had released teasers, screenshots, and character posters, but that’s all they revealed.
In addition to previewing and revealing plenty of familiar faces and places, the trailer also previews the movie’s story, which is not only original, but reboots the MK film franchise. As the trailer reveals, the movie’s protagonist is a new and original character named Cole Young — who is being played by Lewis Tan — an MMA fighter who is being hunted down by Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung and his best warrior, Sub-Zero. The only think I wanted more of was some Techno Syndrome by Immortal.
The lesson? Always avoid Jezebel.
