‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Becomes Highest Grossing MonsterVerse Film

Since its premiere in March, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire proved that sometimes all you need is to feature a bunch of monsters pounding the crap out of each other on the big screen to have a hit. After defeating 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong and the original franchise starter, 2014’s Godzilla, the Adam Wingard sequel has has risen to the top of the food chain and now reigns supreme as the ruler of the MonsterVerse.

The fifth film in the saga raised things to a whole new level, with Godzilla and Kong teaming up against the villainous Skar King. With positive audience reviews, the film’s box office was robust from the outset, and the latest monster mash’s final take of $570 million has now surpassed Kong: Skull Island‘s $569 million record. What makes the success even sweeter for Legendary is that the film had the franchise’s lowest budget of $135 million, making it the most profitable film in the story.

A sequel to Godzilla x Kong is already in the works, but despite the film’s massive success and his enthusiastic statements about returning for another round of monster crazy, director Adam Wingard will not direct Godzilla and Kong’s next adventure. Grant Sputore will take up the mantle for the following installment and had the following to say about it on Instagram.

“Well this is (literal) HUGE news. It’s also a huge honour. I’ve been a giant monster fan for as long as I’ve been a fan of anything – and to follow in the footsteps of the other incredible directors who’ve had their turn in the MonsterVerse is a dream come true. Can’t thank Legendary enough.”

Developing the next film in light of Godzilla X Kong‘s triumph will be a difficult assignment, but Spurtore appears to be up for the challenge. While many fans were surprised by Wingard’s departure, which appeared to be motivated by his desire to make a different film before his next MonsterVerse offering – while Legendary is eager to get things moving on their next money-making monster film – there has been a positive reaction to the I Am Mother director’s appointment as the new keeper of the MonsterVerse flame.

The sequel will be a part of the ever-expanding MonsterVerse. It was just reported that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will be renewed for a second season, and Apple TV+ is developing additional franchise-based content.
