Anthony Mackie Has Big Shoes to Fill in Captain America: Brave New World

Last week, to commemorate the 4th of July, Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie shared a new image of himself in a variation of the costume he wore in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), the original Cap, retired at the end of Avengers: Endgame and offered the shield to his friend Sam Wilson (Mackie).

Sam was reluctant about taking on the mantle which played out in the television series with Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and now Mackie is leading up the fourth film in the franchise, but one that seems to be paired with another franchise, the Incredible Hulk from 2008. The new film includes General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross who was originally played by William Hurt, but after his passing the studio brought in Harrison Ford. We’ll also see the return of Liv Tyler as Betty Ross and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns aka The Leader.

Ross had already appeared in Civil War and Black Widow and another member of the Hulk cast, Tom Roth, returned as Emil Blonsky aka the Abomination in both Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The only major cast member from the film who hasn’t returned, not counting Ed Norton who was replaced by Mark Ruffalo, would be Ty Burrell who played Leonard Sampson aka Doc Sampson from the comics.

So this film has a lot to do, establish Sam as Captain America for the movie going audience and reincorporate the rest of the Hulk cast all while making a film with Harrison Ford and Giancarlo Esposito in it… no pressure on Mackie at all.

It’s already going to be tough enough for him to step into a hand-me-down character after dumping the Falcon persona that everyone loved. Have they explained how a guy without the Super-Soldier serum can toss around a shield like a weapon? Maybe the movie will explain that.
