CW Virtue Signal Alert: Another Gay Woman of Color Auditions for Batwoman

The Cinema Spot reports The CW is eyeing Morgan to star as ‘Ryan Wilder’, the brand new character that’s being created to take up the mantle of Batwoman after Ruby Rose’s sudden departure. The site also reports Morgan will do a screen test for the role with the other members of the Batwoman cast. This news comes on the heels of reports that another black actress, The Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg, who is also gay and identifies as “non-binary” auditioning for the role.

Riverdale star Vanessa Morgan will be auditioning to star as Ryan Wilder, the brand new Batwoman and star of the Batwoman series. Batwoman is returning to The CW in Jan. 2021. If Vanessa Morgan joins the cast she will play opposite Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott, and Nicole Kang. Do you think it’s Morgan’s agent that leaked this audition news? Or is Greg Berlanti getting this out there as a virtue signal to let “fans” and industry know they aren’t shying away from keeping a lesbian superhero on the air played by an actress that’s sufficiently gay enough.

Since The CW is creating an all-new character, one might wonder why an all-new Batwoman also needs to be gay and portrayed by a lesbian or bisexual actress. Can’t a heterosexual woman play the Batman family superhero? Why can’t the character of Ryan Wilder be straight? Is being gay a prerequisite to donning the Batwoman costume?

Expect a decision to be made shortly as the series is scheduled to return in January.
