Most U.S. moviegoers will be forced to settle for watching Wonder Woman 1984 at home next month, after Warner Bros. announced last week that it will be releasing the tentpole on HBO Max because of cinema closures caused by the pandemic.

Over in China, however, superhero movie fans will have access to the sequel both sooner and on big screens nationwide. Warner Bros. announced Friday that the film has been set for a full theatrical release in China on Dec. 18.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be the first new Hollywood tentpole to hit Chinese cinemas since Disney’s Mulan on Sept. 11. With China already having overtaken North America as the world’s biggest box office territory of 2020, the country is all but certain to be Wonder Woman 1984‘s most important theatrical market. The first Wonder Woman earned $90.5 million in China in 2017.

While the U.S. contends with its worst wave of COVID-19 infection to date, China’s movie theater business is booming again thanks to the country’s highly effective suppression of the virus. Regulators have capped movie theater attendance at 75 percent as a safety precaution, but that hasn’t stopped several locally made blockbusters from pulling in huge results, such as Huayi Brothers’ WWII action epic The Eight Hundred, which earned $461 million in August, becoming the biggest worldwide film of the year.

Well isn’t this interesting. The Hollywood Reporter says the writer responsible for soiling DC with repellent violence and other unpleasantries in the past 2 decades is taking a new creator-owned project he’s got (his last one, possibly named Ghost Detectives, came out at least a decade ago), illustrated by Gary Frank, and getting it published at Image, clearly because with the Vertigo imprint no longer in use, he can’t get it greenlighted at the publisher whose downfall he played a part in. And what he says about a certain prominent contributor to Image isn’t very appealing:

Former chief creative officer of DC Geoff Johns will be publishing his first comic book outside of the company in more than a decade, with the announcement of Geiger, a new creator-owned title for Image Comics launching in 2021. […]

“Gary and I have been secretly working away on Geiger since we finished up Doomsday Clock earlier this year and we couldn’t be more excited to be doing our first creator-owned book for Image,” Johns told Bleeding Cool, which broke the news of the title. “Now that we’re miles ahead of the release schedule, we can finally talk about it. Geiger was inspired by the early days of Image when wonderfully all-new, graphic characters like Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon and so many more were at the forefront of their publishing line.”

Oh, how clever, he’s praising Larsen and his overrated sci-fi concoction, which has lately degenerated into a lot of adult sleaze. Even McFarlane’s more of a class act than Larsen. Still, it’s actually a good thing if Johns won’t be working at DC anymore, considering he played a part in their downfall over the past 2 decades. Some might compare this to a rat fleeing a sinking ship, and chances are he’ll never say he’s sorry for bringing such a bombastic viewpoint to his scriptwriting in the 2000s.

Since we’re on the subject, Cosmic Book News got hold of a rumor provided through Ethan Van Sciver, who already spoke earlier about how they’re scaling back their output considerably, this time suggesting that come the middle of next year, they could be closing shop altogether:

“Comic books themselves have fallen into the hands of extremely irresponsible people in editorial and in publishing who have taken comics and turned them from a good, fun pastime, escapist fantasy into identity, political, evil, poisonous pamphlets that insult their own readers,” says Van Sciver on his ComicsArtistPro Secrets YouTube channel. “AT&T fired a BIG portion of their editorial staff in April and just this week they fired the rest of them, essentially. We understand from sources at this point that there are no editors at DC Comics anymore. There are the people who just used to get coffee, interns, people who aren’t making very much, people who are going to be running the company until it ends.”

Van Sciver continues, “I received a tip, by the way, an unverifiable tip, I gotta say, I don’t know if it’s true or not, but they are saying DC Comics will close down publishing paper comics in June of 2021. I think they just solicited March’s comics, and I guess that, if this is true, that’s going to be it.”

Ethan Van Sciver continues with an example of the major problems at DC Comics and what led to its possible closing, which involves former DC Comics editor Andy Khouri whom AT&T fired, as the editor insulted a large part of the DC fanbase.

“So this company was ruined. It was ruined by far left-wing radical activists who would I say invaded,” explains Van Sciver. “These parasitic monsters used DC Comics as their host, their platform to change culture, in an attempt to change politics.”

If they do close shop, it’ll actually be a great mercy. Of course, van Sciver might want to consider that he was involved in some of the most embarrassing moments they put out, such as specific content in the Green Lantern stories written by none other than Johns, who, lest we forget, subsequently exploited the title for pushing pro-Islamic propaganda in the form of Simon Baz 8 years ago, in a story where the villain of the tale was – surprise, surprise – a white supremacist of non-Islamic/Arabic background. Which proves where Johns stands politically, and should serve as an important clue that he’s little different from the other leftists running the store today. Those looking for important reasons why DC was laid low in past decades would do well not to overlook what Johns brought to the table, whether it be jarring violence, or terrible politics, or both.

One more reason a DC closure would be welcome is because, according to New York’s PIX11, filmmaker John Ridley has taken up the role of another leftist exploiting their products for more social justice propaganda:

His new five-issue mini-comic book series, “The Other History of the DC Universe,” re-frames iconic moments in DC Comics history—looking at them instead, through the eyes of superheroes representing traditionally disenfranchised groups. […]

Last month, Ridley hosted the second national Nō Studios Social Justice Summit. The three-day virtual event focused on the community and policing, voter suppression and art activism.

Anybody who’s going to take up that kind of approach is not improving upon a divisive situation, and will only speed things up for DC’s eventual collapse. Besides, it’s already apparent that film and TV producers were part of the problem over the years, with J. Michael Straczynski serving as a leading example of somebody from Hollywood who brought down comicdom with his own political injections that turned up in Spider-Man in the early 2000s, and let’s not forget what a monstrosity the Sins Past storyline was by extension.

One good thing about a potential closure of DC Comics is that then, they may finally get around to reprinting a lot of the older material they haven’t yet from the Golden/Silver/Bronze/Iron Ages, such as the early Hawkman and Starman stories, Justice Society in All Star Comics, Metamorpho, the Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane solos, and even the original Omega Men stories from the mid-80s. And there is plenty more. Still, as dire a situation as we have now, of course it’s a terrible shame it’s come to this, and now the publisher could be on its way out with a whimper. All because of far-left ideologues putting their politics before entertainment while insulting and despising their audiences practically in the very pages of the books they turn out.

Whiter than white.

In a follow up to our Kurt Russell story last week – Grey DeLisle-Griffin is a voice actress with a long history at Lucasfilm, stretching back to 1999.  Her IMDB credits are quite extensive, and she recently voiced Maz Kanata in the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. She once wished death on old white people, and once said that she wanted to see elderly white women beg for mammograms. Apparently, that is the kind of political hyperbole that she feels all actors should be compelled to spit out.

Unless you’re racist and misogynist against elderly white women, in which case Hollywood will probably give you some kind of award.

Thanks to Dennis for the tip.

Or a group of over-the-hill astronauts are called out of retirement…

Often with the same cast members (Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Clint Eastwood, Richard Dreyfuss and Bob De Niro I’m looking at you). More often than not, the results fall flat, with the film-makers trading on our residual affection for cast members,  but (very) occasionally there’s a good ‘un.

THR reports that HBO Max has picked up the DC Comics adaptations DMZ, from executive producer Ava DuVernay, as a limited series.

The four-part series, created by Westworld veteran Roberto Patino, stars Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt. Patino will serve as showrunner on the Warner Bros. TV series and executive produce with DuVernay, who directed the pilot episode. Production on the show, based on the comic by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli, is set for next year.

The series pickup comes 13 months after HBO Max ordered a pilot for DMZ.

DMZ is set in a near future where America is embroiled in a second civil war, which has left Manhattan as a ruined and isolated demilitarized zone. Dawson (USA’s Briarpatch, Hulu’s upcoming Dopesick) stars as Alma Ortega, a medic who begins a harrowing journey to find her son, who was lost when New York City evacuated at the outset of the war. Bratt (Law & Order, Fox’s Star) plays the leader of a powerful gang in the DMZ who has designs on ruling this new world.

As she searches for her son, Alma has to contend with militias, demagogues and warlords and becomes an unlikely source of hope.

Yesterday I pondered if the classic 45-year-old film “Rollerball” is an apt scenario which the US may face in the very near future. This time we investigate “They Live,” John Carpenter’s cult favorite about an alien race which clandestinely has been priming Earth for a corporate-style takeover for decades.

The story centers around George Nada (or just “Nada” in the film credits), a drifter looking for work played by former wrestling star Roddy Piper. In Los Angeles he finds some, and ends up living (for the duration) in an organized homeless camp just outside the city.

Eventually Nada becomes suspicious of the goings-on at an adjacent church. He investigates, and discovers the “singing” he’s been hearing is actually just a recording, and also happens upon a cardboard box full of Ray-Ban-style sunglasses. A short time later, the church is subjected to a violent police raid, and while picking through the aftermath Nada rediscovers the (unscathed) box of eyewear.

To his utter shock, upon putting on the sunglasses Nada sees countless subliminal messages advertised throughout the city. Billboards actually state things like “OBEY,” “MARRY AND REPRODUCE” and “SLEEP,” and a dollar bill even reads “THIS IS YOUR GOD.”

Worse, a certain percentage of people now look appear as skeleton-like figures with very bad skin and bulbous eyes. One of these confronts Nada at a newsstand, asking him “What’s your problem?” presumably in response to Nada’s jaw-gaping expression

Perhaps the most memorable scene is when Nada looks up at a television while in a supermarket and sees an (alien) political candidate promising that our “best days are ahead.” Nada says to himself “It figures it’d be something like this!”

Eventually Nada and his pal Frank (played by “The Thing’s” Keith David) discover that the aliens have been on Earth for quite a long time, and are exploiting it as “their Third World.” Worse, they’ve paid off myriad humans, including powerful politicians, natch, to assist them as the “human power elite.”

Ironically, director Carpenter made the film due to his “growing distaste with the ever-increasing commercialization of 1980s popular culture and politics, particularly the influence of Reaganomics“:

The picture’s premise is that the ‘Reagan Revolution’ is run by aliens from another galaxy. Free enterprisers from outer space have taken over the world, and are exploiting Earth as if it’s a third world planet. As soon as they exhaust all our resources, they’ll move on to another world… I began watching TV again. I quickly realized that everything we see is designed to sell us something…. It’s all about wanting us to buy something. The only thing they want to do is take our money.

Of course, television and other entertainment had been selling us stuff long before Ronald Reagan became president, and ditto  the First World taking advantage of the Third World.

Nevertheless, “They Live” applies today in ways Carpenter couldn’t have imagined.

Social media was about 20 years away when the film came out, and a dozen years after that it’s reasonable to conclude many could not have imagined how powerful it would become. As with the mega-powerful corporation bigwigs in “Rollerball,” the “They Live” aliens control what people see and read, allowing only “acceptable” versions of news and history.

Facebook, Twitter and Google haven’t yet made use of the subliminal messaging like that in “They Live” (as far as we know!), but they are in the business of guiding how you think. Their algorithms filter out “badthink,” special “notices” get slapped on various tweets and posts, and censorship “mistakes” get apologized for long after the fact, and only if there’s enough pressure applied. (It’s weird how those mistakes always go in one direction: to the right.)

Like the aliens in the film who referred to humans aware of their infiltration as “terrorists,” the modern media similarly frames groups to suit an agenda, usually progressive. The violence that took place across American cities this summer and fall, led by the radical Antifa and to a lesser extent Black Lives Matter, was routinely portrayed as “instigated” by right-wing militia types, and even President Trump himself. Networks remarkably went out of their way to show that the percentage of such “protests” — approximately 93 — were “peaceful”; never mind that the remaining seven percent decimated whole parts of large metropolises.

Most recently, any talk about voter fraud, a “stolen” election, or anything that casts the slightest doubt on Joe Biden’s victory is either labeled or censored. Three-to-four years ago on the other hand, talk of Trump colluding with Russia was all over the social media and mainstream media headlines.

With the coming of the COVID-19 pandemic, the “human power elite” is exemplified by leaders such as California’s Gavin Newsom (see above), New York’s Andrew Cuomo and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer. While your average “non-essential” American worker — like George Nada — lives paycheck-to-paycheck and hopes their income source continues unabated, officials like these three a**holes are caught violating their own edictsfollowed by the flimsiest of excuses for their behavior.

Those in the mainstream media are no better. For example, Andrew Cuomo’s brother, CNN talking head Chris Cuomo, also rants constantly about those allegedly not taking COVID seriously, yet has been caught numerous times in public without a mask.

So what do you think? Is “Rollerball” or “They Live” more fitting for our present circumstances?

The upcoming Cowboy Bebop live-action series at Netflix is rounding out its main cast with six new additions. Geoff Stults, Tamara Tunie, Mason Alexander Park, Rachel House, Ann Truong, and Hoa Xuande have all joined the series. They join previously announced series stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Alex Hassell, and Elena Satine.

Based on the anime series of the same name, Cowboy Bebop is described as the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts, as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world for the right price.

Stults will appear as Chalmers, who is said to be the epitome of a Western lawman. He is also Jet Black’s (Shakir) former co-detective in the ISSP’s Homicide Division. He wears a chronic smile that makes you want to punch him square in the face… especially Jet. And that’s only partly because Chalmers is dating his ex-wife these days.

Tunie will play Ana, the proprietor of the hottest underground bluesy jazz club on Mars. And while she acts as a surrogate mom to Spike (Cho), there is nothing warm and cuddly about her. Cool and intense, Ana is definitely not a woman to be trifled with.

Park will play Gren, Ana’s right-hand person. They run the front of the house for Ana’s jazz club. As capable with their wit as a glock, as confident in a dress as a suit, they are a Bowie-esque embodiment of 22nd century handsome and seductive beauty.

House will appear as Mao, capo of the Syndicate’s “White Tigers” family. Despite, or perhaps because of, her blue collar background, Mao is more cunning, adept, crafty and deadly than her counterparts.

Truong and Xuande will play Shin and Lin respectively. Shin and Lin serve as Vicious’ twin Syndicate henchman. Despite being fearful of their volatile boss, they are fiercely loyal to Vicious (Hassell) in his quest to take down Spike Spiegel.

The Israeli innovations site NoCamels interviewed two local artists, Yehuda and Maya Devir, who produced a webcomic about their parenting experiences that’s also available in graphic novel format:

Raising a rambunctious one-year-old is no easy task, but throw in a global health crisis and a thriving career in comics and you’ve got the chaotic but rewarding lives of Israeli couple Yehuda and Maya Devir. The two have been depicting their domestic adventures for several years now through charming, hilarious illustrations that have often gone viral. And those that paint a picture of life with an infant and toddler are especially relatable.

There’s more good news, though. Last month, the Tel Aviv-based duo announced they were expecting their second child. And this week, the artists will release their wildly popular webcomic series One of Those Days as a first-edition hardcover featuring 272 vividly printed pages of their work, published by Penguin Random House. The book, which was previously available for pre-order on the Penguin Random House website and on Amazon.comhas already become Amazon’s #1 new release in the bookseller’s Romance Graphic Novels section.

The couple’s ongoing series chronicles the life and love of Yehuda and Maya Devir as they take on the minutiae of marriage, the ups and downs of daily life, and the paradigm shift of new parenthood.

Thinking about this, it’s exactly what the US market needs to see more of, because it’s hardly a seriously emphasized theme today, whereas sleazy stories like a gay marriage for Northstar have become far more so, and look at how Marvel insulted people’s intellects by not following through on a marriage between Kitty Pryde and Colossus, all so that later, she could be turned bisexual. And lest we forget Joe Quesada’s erasure of the Spider-marriage in 2007, and how DC similarly wouldn’t enable a marriage between Batman and Catwoman. That’s how far the mainstream’s fallen for starters, and the independent scene’s no better.

That’s why the Devirs’ webcomic and GN series is decidedly welcome news, because almost nobody in comicdom stateside is respecting marriage and parenthood today, and a more positive example is in dire need. That’s why Devirs’ contribution is a good thing, and I’d strongly suggest the western market start taking note of the themes they’re working on.
