DC’s “Jim Lee & Friends” panel at San Diego Comic-Con was packed with announcements and reveals, and a conversation with many of the comic publisher’s writers moderated by DC’s Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee.
In a “it can only happen at San Diego Comic-Con moment”, two comic industry titans, Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo, surprised fans at the panel with a major announcement. They are teaming up for Batman/Spawn #1, a 48-page one-shot due out December 13. This marks the first reunion of the two iconic characters since 1994.
The two characters will have interacted with each other two previous times total. The first time was a 1994 Image Comics one-shot titled Spawn/Batman, which was written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Todd McFarlane. The second was Batman-Spawn: War Devil by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, and Klaus Janson, which was also released in 1994, but by DC Comics. (DC also revealed that War Devil will be reprinted on November 15). Spawn creator Todd McFarlane also had high praise for Batman artist Greg Capullo during the panel.
Comic veteran Shane Davis commented on this reunion with some very intriguing suggestions as to what it could lead to.
Wouldn’t it be great if McFarlane took over DC Comics? Sound off in the comments.
