Comic book scribe and novelist Mike Baron just wrapped up a successful KickStarter campaign for his Nexus prose novel. The two-time Eisner and Inkpot winner not only created the superheroes Nexus and Badger, but his career as a comics writer is legendary, including lengthy runs at both DC Comics and Marvel working on The Flash, Punisher, and even Star Wars.
Along with artist Steve Rude, Mike Baron first launched Nexus back in 1981 as a three-issue black and white comic book series that evolved into an ongoing series initially published by Capital Comics. The series followed Horatio Valdemar Hellpop who received his Nexus powers from an alien entity that required Horatio to kill mass murderers whose identities appeared to him in dreams.
Years ago, Rude asked Baron what Nexus story he would most like to pursue. The answer? Nexus versus Galactus, but since Marvel still owns Galactus, and they ain’t sharing, the pair decided to create their own planet-devouring monster, Gourmando.
In the new novel Nexus, the cosmic avenger faces Gourmando, a vast, alien entity that consumes civilizations and whose herald Gnosis swoops the cosmos on a silver board seeding worlds to make them edible. Sound familiar? The novel is loosely based on a storyline he worked out with Steve Rude, which will be published next year by Dark Horse. However, this novel is different from the graphic novel, and covers Ylum and its colorful cast of characters in much greater depth.
Mike Baron says that the response on Kickstarter was nothing short of “tremendous”. The campaign nearly exceeded the initial fundraising goal by an additional 200% and Baron expects to deliver the prose novel by September. Additionally, fans of Baron and Rude’s beloved creation may want to also check out The Nexus: The Newspaper Strips Volume 1—The Coming of Gourmando which will be available early next year.
For Mike Baron’s next project, he’s returning to sequential comics, pulling inspiration from the pages of his 2019 best-selling novel Florida Man, which tells the humorous and bizarre tales of a redneck and his girlfriend living in a trailer by the swamp. Florida Man launched as a crowdfunded graphic novel on Indiegogo today and the graphic novel dives into the heart of many of those crazy adventures you’ve heard about in both the news and in several very popular internet memes.
Mike has enlisted up and coming illustrator Todd Mulrooney to handle the art chores, and the book is looking at a November release. There are also some surprises being planned that should delight long-time fans of Mike Baron if the campaign becomes a hit, which seems very likely. Baron also enlisted Chris Braly, our managing editor here at Bleeding Fool, to handle the editing chores.’
After seeing the Amazon reviews of the novel and sampling some of artwork, I’d say it looks like Baron is bringing back “funny books” with this one. Check out this video that gets into the story a bit, you won’t be disappointed. The quintessential “Florida man” is finally going to be defined in all his outrageous adventures that take place in one of the most magical and bizarre states in America.
