My name is Mark Ross and I am an independent filmmaker. Filmmaking is my lifelong passion. Unlike Hollywood, I am not motivated by tent pole franchises, and creating mega blockbusters. For me, making a film is a way to use my passion to embrace my imagination and creativity to re-connect with the sense of awe and wonder of my youth.
During the recent pandemic, I noticed that a lot of my peers were unemployed or furloughed. Many of my peers were dealing with the repercussions that often accompany the loss of employment: depression, self-doubt, loss of self-worth, and so-on. My personal passion project, Curse of the Phantom Shadow, helped me deal with the situation. I made this video to inspire others to take on a passion project during these difficult times. Perhaps by seeing my journey, they will be inspired to take one of their own.
Curse of the Phantom Shadow is my multi-year passion project. It embodies all the things that I thought were cool growing up: secret decoder wheels, pulp magazines, comic books, pin up girls, hot rods, and Republic Movie Serials. It derives its inspiration from the same source materials that inspired Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. In short, it is my attempt to recapture the feeling I had when I first saw those films in the theater.
Hopefully, by showing my passion project, I can encourage others to purse their passions during this pandemic. Perhaps by following my progress, others will see that it is possible to attempt to reclaim our childhood sense of wonder and awe. As adults we often lose the magic in our lives. A passion project can mitigate that, and provide an amazing sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment.
